Okay it is On. Officially on.
My Swedish Visa has been approved with only 8 days to go, and I can let out that last breath of "what if"....
The entirety of this application process has been emotionally gruelling, as I've spent the last four months in perpetual limbo, as I was never fully sure, but planning and letting go of my house, job, life, like I was.
That's it, that is all I was going off of.
I bought a pair of rain/snow boots to celebrate the new life that I am about to step into. I feel strangely calm now. There is no more wishing and the waiting game is finally over. I am in the LA airport about to fly home to Maui, and I am so excited to lay my head on my pillow, wake up, stick my hands in the earth and absorb every ounce of my last week in Maui. \
It's all Happening.
We climb the mountain
and suck in air
still crisp from the Heavens.
We hold hands
remembering the climb
before I could walk
when he carried me
Father & I.
I am so excited that I am finally able to share this music and this video with you, featuring my beloved little brother Mekila Wittman. The first time I heard the EP for Water Song, I was sitting in the comfort of my home in Kula. At the time our speaker system was on it's way out leaving the listener with an unbalanced experience. Mekila, not wanting in any way to compromise his sound, let me and Kalani take turns listening to Water Song only through a set of approved headphones.
I went first, setting myself on our couch, placing the headphones on and eagerly anticipating what I was about to hear. The first sounds had me alert, and completely stilled. This was my brother, this was his art, un-compromised and unique to him alone. The sound was so rich and so full, it filled my body from the inside out, leaving me on the brink of tears. Then it was Kalani's turn to place the headphones on and listen.
We got in the car after that all three of us grinning our heads off, windows up, volume up so we could listen again and again and hear together.
That was some months ago now, and the fact that the EP's have finally been released makes me so exceptionally happy after the agony of having to hold something so beautiful from the rest of the world. I believe that Mekila's music is here to sway the modern times and to help the World remember Art as it should be, pure, strong and original. A true print of an individuals being.
The music video is a whole other story. I was only fortunate to watch it for the first time about a week ago, a few days before it released to the public. As a sibling of Mekila's I am aware of the diligence he takes in regards to keeping his art true. I feel that the collaboration between Mekila, Gypsy Pop and Howlin' Whale has proved to be most successful in this regard. Not only is it beautifully shot, but the entirety of the video is Mekila, from the ice cream truck he lived in, to his trusty guitar and outfit, everything is real. Even the physical spaces are a reflection of his unique view of our home, Maui. There was not a singe shot that was remotely out of place or un-imaginable. So World, this is it. This is an opportunity to be a witness to an individual who will undoubtedly break the future.
And I mean that in the best of ways.
I am so proud.
WATER SONG is the title track of Mekila's new EP, released this summer with GYPSYPOP RECORDS. With a musical landscape of wasteland, flooding, and magic, Water Song is accompanied richly by Howlin’ Whale in her directorial debut.
Mekila's music is available for purchase on itunes, SoundCloud, BandCamp, Google Play & Amazon.
