Since returning home in the summer of 2014 I have noticed my tendency to get caught up in old stories on the many familiar faces that are around every turn. I have a story for everyone, the girl who makes my coffee or the guy who drives by in a lifted truck. I found myself telling or being told these old stories. It took me a moment to understand that the new relationship I so desired to have with my community would never change, if I wasn't allowing the individuals who make it up to own and grow into the many new stories that they now inhabit. A huge part of the work that I want to do here is create a loving space, vibrant with new stories that will light our way into the future so many of us desire. My Hawai'i section is a part of a very personal practice of working with seeing my community, my home, my family with new eyes. I am curious to know what all of our communities could like if we allowed ourselves the ability to see the gifts that are already present in our own neighbourhoods.
